Things to Remember:

  • Homework will be set each Thursday and needs to be returned the following Tuesday. Homework will consist of a Maths task (based on the topics we have covered in class that week) and phonics.
  • Library visits are on a Tuesday. Please ensure your child hands in their library book by Tuesday, in order for it to be changed weekly.
  • Maths games need to be returned by Wednesday in order for it to be changed.
  • P.E. days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure your child does not wear any jewellery to school on these days. Children will also need warm, navy tracksuit bottoms for the colder months, as we will still be going outside.

In Year 1 we are trying to become more independent and responsible. The children are responsible for handing in letters, contact books and any other belongings.

What we will cover this term:

Literacy:

  • We are continuing to revise our sounds during our phonics lessons.
  • This term we will be reading 'The Snail and the Whale', 'How to Find Gold' and traditional tales.
  • We will continue to develop our sentences by including adjectives, suffixes and conjunctions. We are also developing our cursive writing.
  • For spelling, there will be a focus on children selecting the correct grapheme within a word,

Numeracy

  • We will be counting everyday and everywhere!
  • We will be learning all about multiplication and division.
  • We will be learning about position and direction.
  • We will be time and money.
  • We will continue to develop our problem solving and reasoning skills.

Please also practice telling the time (to o'clock and half past) at home, and talk about what time it is when you are doing certain things e.g. eating breakfast, leaving for school, going swimming etc.

We also ask that you drop in simple word problems for them to use their mental addition and subtractions skills to solve. E.g. I have 5 carrots for dinner but needed 8. How many more do I need?
